Opening an Account

Who can open an Axos Invest Managed Portfolio account?

Good news! We welcome anyone over the age of 18 with a U.S. permanent address* and social security number, including H-1B visa holders, to open a Managed Portfolios account.

Can international residents open an Axos Invest account?

Yes. Axos Invest welcomes Resident Aliens, Non-Resident Aliens (NRA), and Green Card holders to both our Managed Portfolios and Self-Directed Trading programs. Open your choice of an IRA or traditional taxable account today, or talk to one of our Relationship Managers for more information; 877-308-5293.

What types of accounts does Axos Invest Managed Portfolios offer?

We offer a variety of accounts to help you save and invest, including Traditional and Roth IRAs. Axos Invest offers:

What is the minimum amount needed to open a Managed Portfolios account?

You need to deposit a minimum of $500 to open an Axos Invest Managed Portfolios account. We recommend setting up an auto-deposit to put money into your Managed Portfolios account on a regular schedule.

Why is my account pending?

After you link your bank account, it takes approximately 1-3 business days for your bank to transfer your first deposit and one more business day for Managed Portfolios to build your portfolio. If you log in during this period, you'll see your account is still pending. We'll send you an email letting you know when your money is invested and ready to view.

Your account may be pending because your micro-deposits haven’t been confirmed or because we need additional information from you to verify your account. Log in to our platform for instructions. Also check to see if we've emailed you. If you have any confusion, please reach out to [email protected].

Where can I find your app?

What is a goal?

A goal is a financial target. You can save toward multiple targets, including retirement, deposits for a new home, weddings, or simply building wealth.

Which goal is right for me?

That’s entirely up to you. We offer several types of goals: Emergency Fund, Retirement, Build Wealth, New Home, and more.

How do you calculate goal recommendations?

Goal recommendations are based on several factors, including but not limited to your income, net worth, and time horizon. Remember to keep your Managed Portfolios account up to date to receive the most accurate recommendations!

Pricing

What is the advisory fee for Axos Invest Managed Portfolios?

Axos Invest charges an annual 0.24% advisory fee on all accounts over $500. If your end of month account balance is less than $500, the fee is $1 per month.

When will the 0.24% be charged?

1/12 of 0.24% of your account balance (or $1 if your end of month account balance is less than $500) is withdrawn from your account each month. The fee is charged retroactively for the previous month – i.e., your January fee is deducted in February.

How is the fee paid?

Axos Invest auto-deducts your fee from your account. If you don’t have enough cash available in your Managed Portfolio account to cover the fee, we may need to sell some securities.

Does Axos Invest Managed Portfolio have any closing fees?

Axos Invest doesn’t charge closing fees for your taxable personal investment account. However, if you close an Axos Invest IRA, there is a $40 fee. Our clearing firm, Axos Clearing, may charge closing or transfer fees.

Axos Clearing is a clearing corporation that handles custody, execution, confirmation, settlement, and delivery of your funds and securities in your portfolio. Closing fees are only charged once Axos Invest or Axos Clearing receives your request to transfer or close your account.

What are the fees for premium Managed Portfolio services?

You can add these features at no cost.

Keeping Your Account Up To Date

How do I update my personal information?

It’s easy peasy. Log in to your account online or through the app and select Profile & Settings from the drop-down menu.

  • Select Personal Information.

  • Select the area you would like to edit.

  • Make the edit and choose Save.

When do I need to update my personal or financial information?

You should update your contact, financial, and employment details when anything changes. This information allows Axos to help when you apply for a loan or new account. At the very least, review your information once a year to ensure it’s correct and up to date.

How do I change or update my bank account details?

This is an important one to keep up to date! You can delete any external bank accounts when you sign in online or in the app. Simply:

  • Navigate to the account.

  • Within Account Settings, select to remove the account.

You can add a new account by selecting Add an Account. Then:

  • Select your external bank.

  • Follow the prompts to link your account.

How do I close my Axos Invest Managed Portfolios account?

If you would like to close your Managed Portfolios account, please log in and send us a secure message.

Can I unsubscribe from Axos Invest emails?

Oh, no! We don’t want you to miss out on important information. That said, you can manage your email preferences, and unsubscribe if that’s what you really want, using the link found at the bottom of any Axos Invest email. Follow the link to select which types of emails you’d like to receive. Please note that you can’t unsubscribe from transactional emails.

Using Your Axos Invest Managed Portfolio Account

How do I put money in my account?

When you log in online or through the app, navigate to your account. Then, select Move Money. Follow the prompts to choose the accounts you want to move money from and to, the amount, the frequency of the deposit, and your preferred date.

Do I have to link to a bank account?

Technically, no. However, linking your bank account not only gives you the authority to transfer funds in and out of your accounts with ease but also helps us make sure your money is going to the right account. If you really want to, you can wire funds to your account, transfer from another brokerage, or even mails us a check.

How do I set up a recurring deposit?

Here’s how to set up a recurring deposit from your Managed Portfolios account.

Once you log in online or through the app:

  • Navigate to your account.

  • Choose Move Money.

  • Select Transfer Frequency and choose how often you’d like to make the transfer.

  • Follow the remaining prompts.

Do I have to set up recurring deposits?

You don’t have to set up recurring deposits, but you can. Scheduling regular deposits can help you stay on track for your financial goals.

How do I pause or cancel recurring deposits?

If you want to turn off your recurring deposits:

  • Log in to your account.

  • Navigate to your account and select Move Money.

  • Choose Scheduled Transfers.

  • Select the Settings button next to the transfer you wish to remove.

  • Follow the remaining prompts.

We get that sometimes circumstances change, but here are some tips to keep in mind. Making regular deposits into your Managed Portfolio account keeps you on track to reach your milestones on time. Recurring deposits also help with dollar cost averaging, which means that over time, your account buys more shares when prices are low and fewer shares when prices are high.

How do I take money out of my account?

Whether you met your goal or need a cash injection, withdrawing money from your account requires just a few simple steps:

  • Log into your account online or in the app.

  • Select your Managed Portfolios account.

  • Choose Move Money.

  • Select your Managed Portfolio account for Transfer From.

  • Follow the remaining prompts.

How long do withdrawals take?

After you schedule your withdrawal, it usually takes 3-5 business days for the transfer to complete.

Are there any consequences for taking money out of my Managed Portfolios account?

Several factors can influence the answer to this question. First, did the sale of your stocks create a profit or a loss? If you sustained a loss, you might be able to claim it on your taxes. Are you withdrawing funds from a tax-advantaged retirement account?

However, if you profited from the sale and withdrawal, you might be subject to short- or long-term capital gains. Generally, if you held the stock for less than a year, any profits are short-term capital gains and taxed at your regular income tax rate. If you held the stock for a year or longer, your profits are long-term capital gains. The tax rates for long-term capital gains vary depending on your taxable income.

Please note that if you withdraw funds from a retirement portfolio, such as an IRA or 401(k), there may be some penalties, depending on your age. The penalty tax is usually 10% of the taxable amount you withdraw if you’re younger than 59 ½. Additionally, you may need to include any withdrawals in your taxable income and pay income tax on the distribution amount.

There are some exceptions. Make sure to talk to your tax advisor or accountant for personalized advice.

Can I move money between goals?

At the moment, you can’t move money between goals.

How do I edit a goal?

You can update your goals with just a few clicks:

  • Log in to your account online or through the app.

  • Navigate to your Managed Portfolio account.

  • Select the goal you want to change.

  • Choose Edit Goal.

  • Follow the prompts.

How do I close a goal?

All about IRAs

What IRAs does Axos Invest Managed Portfolios offer?

You can open Traditional and Roth IRAs with Axos Invest.

How do I set up an IRA?

Begin the process of opening a Managed Portfolios account. When you reach the Invest Goals page, select Retirement. After providing your expected age of retirement and the amount you expect to spend per year, you will be asked to choose between opening a personal investment account, a Traditional IRA, or a Roth IRA. Select the one that meets your needs.

Want to set up an IRA within the Axos app? It’s easy. Go to the Invest screen and select Add an Account. choose Get Started. You will find IRA options under the Retirement header. Simply select the type of IRA you wish to open and choose Open an account.

How do I rollover funds from other retirement accounts to my Axos Invest IRA?

To start the rollover process to your IRA with Axos Invest, please send us a secure message, and attach a recent statement from the current provider. One of our associates can assist you with the process.

Can I make a contribution for the previous tax year?

Yes, you can contribute to your IRA for the previous year, up to the tax filing deadline.

What can I do if I contribute too much?

Send a secure message to the customer service team from your online profile to start the “Removal of Excess” request.

About Your Managed Portfolio Account

Where can I view my profile?

When you log in online or through the app, you can view your information across different screens. For your personal information, including contact, employment, and financial details, select Profile & Settings from the drop-down menu.

For your Managed Portfolio details, select your account. This will take you to an account details screen that houses an overview of your accounts and milestones. You can review details and make edits.

Where can I see my portfolio details?

Log in to your account online or through the app, then:

  • Navigate to your Managed Portfolios account.

  • Select the goal you want to review.

  • From here, you can view your goal’s past performance, projection, portfolio details, and transaction history.

Where can I see my account activity?

You can review your activity when you log in online or through the app. Once you’re in, select your account to review all the details.

Where can I find my statements?

You can access and download your statements when you sign in online or through the app.

  • Select your Managed Portfolios Account.

  • Navigate to Statements & Documents.

  • Choose the year and document type.

Where can I find my tax documents?

You can access your tax documents when you sign in online or through the app.

All Managed Portfolio assets are held in an individual brokerage account in your name with Axos Clearing. Axos Clearing is an affiliate company to Axos Invest.

How does Axos Invest protect the money in my account?

Your account is covered and protected by SIPC in the event that the brokerage firm was to become insolvent. SIPC protects investors against losses that stem from the financial failure of a brokerage company. How soon can I start trading after I open an account?

You can begin to trade as soon as your first deposit settles in your self-directed trading account.

What kinds of securities can I trade?

As a Self-Directed Trading account holder, you can trade stocks, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), mutual funds. Self-Directed Trading customers may also be approved for options trading. You can apply for Axos Elite membership for advanced trading options, including margin trading and fully paid lending.

  • Indicate that you have read and agree to the Brokerage Transfer Agreement and Disclaimer

Commissions and Fees

What are Axos Invest’s Self-Directed Trading commissions and fees?

Axos Invest offers $0 commissions for stocks and ETFs. Options are $1 per contract, and mutual funds are $9.95 per trade (no-load). Other rates and fees may apply. View all rates and fees.

Remember, Axos Elite members get discounted rates and fees.

How are these fees paid?

Any fees associated with trades are added to the cost of the trade or deducted from the proceeds of a sell.

Any other fees are debited from your account on a schedule depending on the type of fee or when a certain action takes place. For example, we would charge a transfer fee when a transfer is processed.

Are there fees if I close my account?

We charge nominal fees if you close an IRA, and we charge transfer fees for Automated Customer Account Transfer (ACAT) or non-ACAT transfer when you move funds out of your account.

Keeping Your Self-Directed Trading Account Up to Date

How do I update my personal information?

It’s easy peasy. Log in to your online profile and click on your initials in the top right corner of your screen.

  • Select Profile & Settings from the dropdown menu

  • Choose Contact Info in the tile with your name

  • When the Contact Info tile opens, select the edit icon next to the details you want to update

If you’ve changed jobs, just repeat this process on the Employment Info tile.

How do I change or update my bank account details?

This is an important one to keep up to date! You can delete any external bank accounts from your dashboard. Simply:

  • Choose Accounts Header

  • Select the Non-Axos Bank hyperlink (name of your external bank account)

  • Choose the tab Account Details

  • On the right-hand side under “I want to …” Select the hyperlink, Remove the account

You can add a new account by choosing the Add an Account button. Then:

  • Select your external bank

  • Choose the type of account you want to link

  • Log in to your external bank account to link

How do I update my financial information?

Your profile is so easy to update. Simply log in and click on your initials in the top right corner of your screen. Then:

  • Select Profile & Settings from the dropdown menu

  • Choose Personal Info in the tile with your name

  • When the Personal Info tile opens, select the edit icon next to the details you want to update

How do I close my Self-Directed Trading account?

Using Your Self-Directed Trading Account

How do I place a trade (buy or sell)?

Once you log in to your account:

  • Select the accounts tab

  • Select Self-Directed Trading account

  • Choose Trade Securities (it’s right above the Overview block)

  • Select Trading tab

  • Choose the investment instrument (Equities, Options, Mutual funds) in the menu bar on the left

  • Complete the trade fields

  • Choose continue

  • Review your trade details

  • Correct or Confirm the order

Where can I view my open orders?

Once you log in to your account:

  • Select on accounts tab

  • Select Self-Directed Trading account

  • Choose Trade Securities (it’s right above the Overview block)

  • Select “Orders”

Where can I view my Self-Directed Trading portfolio?

Once you log in to your account:

  • Select on accounts tab

  • Select Self-Directed Trading account

  • Select My Menu

  • Select Portfolio from the drop down menu

How do I transfer funds to my Self-Directed Trading account?

You can make deposits to your Self-Directed Trading Account.

Once you log in to your online dashboard:

  • Choose the Move Money bar

  • Use the Transfer From drop-down to select the account from which you want to move money

  • Use the Transfer To drop-down to choose your Self-Directed Trading account

  • Select the amount of the deposit you’d like to make

How do I withdraw money from my Self-Directed Trading account?

Yay! You met your goal or have something special in mind. Remember, you can only withdraw money from your Cash & Cash Investments. If all of your money is invested, you need to liquidate (sell) the appropriate amount of investments.

  • Log in to your profile

  • Select Accounts tab

  • Choose Self-Directed Trading Account

  • Select Account Details tab

  • Choose Make a Transfer under the I want to… section

  • Choose the accounts you want to transfer money to and from

  • Enter the amount you want to move

  • Select the frequency and date

  • Select Transfer Funds

Do we have a trade window?

Axos Elite members have access to extended trading hours.

  • Normal hours: 9:30am to 4:00pm ET

  • Pre-market hours: 4:00am to 9:25am ET

  • Post-market hours: 4:01PM to 7:00pm ET

What happens to a trade placed outside of normal trading hours?

When you place a trade outside of normal hours, you can choose the market session (normal, pre, or post) for the order to process. If you don’t choose a session, your order is placed in a queue to trade when the next normal trading hours open.

How do I access research tools?

Market research is available on your trading platform dashboard. Remember, Axos Elite members have access to real-time market data and premium TipRanks™ market research.

How do I activate margin trading?

Margin trading is only available to Axos Elite members. When you sign up for Axos Elite, you also have access to premium TipRanks market research, real-time market data, and fully paid lending options.
